IRCAI International research centre for Artificial intelligence

The International Research Center on Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO (IRCAI) was established by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia and is located in Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia.The establishment of IRCAI was unanimously supported by all member states at the 40th session of the General Conference of UNESCO in November 2019. IRCAI was officially established in October 2020 and is a new and the first Category 2 center under the auspices of UNESCO, focusing directly on approaches to achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through the use of artificial intelligence.

In accordance with Article 6 of the Treaty between UNESCO and the Government of the Republic of Slovenia establishing IRCAI, the objectives of IRCAI are:

• carrying out theoretical and applied research on AI and digitisation,
• Developing freely accessible solutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on SDG 4 (quality education), SDG 5 (gender equality), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure), SDG 10 (reducing inequalities), SDG 13 (climate action), SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions) and SDG 17 (partnership for the goals),
• providing decision-making support to Member States (UN) to address technical, legal, social and ethical challenges at the crossroads of technologies and policies,
• Providing training to increase the capacities of AI,
• Encouraging different stakeholders and decision-makers to address the challenges posed by the development of AI,
• Disseminating information and raising awareness of AI,
• Promoting measures to address gender inequalities in AI development and employment,
• Facilitate North-North and North-South cooperation in AI development, with a focus on AI development in Africa.

IRCAI, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and representatives of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU, in close cooperation with Slovenian embassies and other permanent representations in 9 countries around the world, have prepared an active programme on AI during the Slovenian Presidency and have provided the basis for continuing and promoting bilateral discussions on AI and sustainable development, which will continue after the Presidency.

The International Research Centre in Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO is launching a call for proposals for listing the Top 100 projects solving problems related to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with the application of Artificial Intelligence.

We wish to contribute to the SDGs by making the world’s largest sustainable solutions platform even more effective and impactful. In 2021, IRCAI will produce a special report showcasing 10 of the most compelling cases and breakthrough solutions among Artificial Intelligence projects with a focus on Sustainable Development impact. These top 10 projects will also receive support with training, advisory, networking and mentoring activities across IRCAI partners.
